Canada supports brockville ceremony to commemorate victoria cross hero

Lieutenant-Colonel Thain MacDowell, VC, DSO, to be honoured at Legion dedication ceremony Brockville – Gord Brown, the Member of Parliament for Leeds—Grenville, and the Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, are pleased to announce federal government support of $3,300 for a special ceremony in Brockville to be held by The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #96 in commemoration of Lieutenant-Colonel Thain MacDowell, VC, DSO. Lieutenant-Colonel Thain MacDowell was one of four soldiers in the First World War to earn a Victoria Cross. Though wounded, he was the only recipient of the Victoria Cross, Canada’s highest military honour, to survive the war. “Congratulations and thanks to Branch #96 for helping to bring together this important memorial for one of Canada’s greatest heroes,” said MP Brown. “The City of Brockville played an important part in Lieutenant-Colonel Thain MacDowell’s life as the place he grew up, went to school and now rests. We as a City are very proud of the accomplishments of this brave Canadian and honoured that Brockville played a part in his journey through life.” “Our Government is proud to support community events like this so that we never forget the sacrifices made by our nation’s truest heroes: our Veterans,” said Minister Thompson. “The men and women who served during times of war and peace deserve to be honoured and remembered for their countless contributions to our country.” The tribute to Lieutenant-Colonel MacDowall includes First World War displays and memorabilia and an exhibit entitled Visions of War created by students from Brockville Collegiate Institute. Students were asked to select an evocative war art picture and narrate why the chosen picture moved them. Following the ceremony, students will share their thoughts with the Veterans, current serving Canadian Forces members and the general public in attendance and a light lunch of trench stew will be served. Veterans, Canadian Forces members and youth will be in attendance. Funding for this ceremony was made possible through the Veterans Affairs Canada’s Community Engagement Partnership Fund.
